FOR M.6

There is a small fire station in town. At this station, the firefighters are volunteers.

That means they work for free. The fire station gets some money from the government

to take care of the building and the fire truck. But the fire station has a problem.

Last winter, a pipe in the fire station froze. Then it burst. Water went everywhere.

There is a lot of damage. Now the building cannot be used. What is worse, the fire station

does not have enough money for the repairs needed to fix the damage. The people in town

are worried about what will happen if there is a fire and no working fire station.

But they will figure out a way to solve the problem. They always do!

                                  A Present for Father

Sunday is Father’s Day, and Maria wants to buy a special gift for her

father. She looked at the Father’s Day ads in the newspaper, but they mostly

had sales on ties and bottles of cologne. Her father doesn’t like to wear ties, and

he never wears cologne. He used to go fishing or bowling on the weekends, but

lately he’s been staying home and working in the garden.

Maria can spend about $45 on her father’s gift. She wants to buy him

something that he will use every week. Last year she got him a sweater and two sports

shirts. She wants to get him something different this year.   What should Maria buy her father for Father’s Day? Why?

The trains are always late.

A man was complaining to a railroad engineer.

What's the use of having a train schedule if the trains are always late.

The railroad engineer replied.

How would we know they were late, if we didn't have a schedule?

Nasreddin's Visitors

One day a visitor came to Nasreddin's house. "I am your cousin from Konya," he said, "and I have brought you a duck to celebrate the visit." Nasreddin was delighted. He asked his wife to cook the duck, and served the visitor a fine dinner.

The next day another visitor arrived. "I am the friend of the man who brought you the duck," he said. Nasreddin invited him in and gave him a good meal. The next day another visitor arrived, and said he was the friend of the friend of the man who had brought the duck. Again Nasreddin invited him in for a meal. However, he was getting annoyed. Visitors seemed to be using his house as a restaurant.

Then another visitor came, and said he was the friend of the friend of the friend of the man who had brought the duck. Nasreddin invited him to eat dinner with him. His wife brought some soup to the table and the visitor tasted it. "What kind of soup is this?" asked the visitor. "It tastes just like warm water." "Ah!" said Nasreddin, "That is the soup of the soup of the soup of the duck."
